TO EAT, OR NOT TO EAT … before a workout that is

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

YES!!! - PLEASE, EAT!!!

Myth: Working out on an empty stomach will help you burn more fat.

LIE!!!

Truth: You should always eat something before exercising so your body has enough fuel to power through your workout.

Starving yourself before exercising can be detrimental to your body. Your body needs a certain amount of sugar for fuel when training. When that blood sugar is not there, your body will convert your own muscle tissue into energy. You’re trying to build/maintain your muscles, not eat away at it.

Your body needs energy to perform at a high intensity. It is a known fact that intensity training will have greater effects at an accelerated pace. There’s no way you can do that if you haven’t properly fueled your body.

My Thoughts:

  • A car simply cannot run on an empty tank.

  • A Phone can’t work without battery power.

Same thing goes for a human being. If you don’t eat before a workout, your workout won’t be as intense – I for one don’t enjoy working out on an empty stomach.  You won’t have the strength, speed, or stamina to burn those calories and speed up your results because you’ll most likely suffer from low blood sugar, which will make you dizzy and sluggish.

What to eat: Now, just because I say eat, doesn’t mean you should kack and wolf down a whole meal o – NO!  …You don’t need to gorge yourself; a healthy snack will do the trick.… protein shake, a medium sized apple, or banana. I personally just keep it simple - 1 cup of green tea with either 1 banana and I’m good.

When to eat: I suggest you eat 45 minutes to an hour before training. No sooner, because that can cause cramps and make you feel uncomfortable during your workout.
